About Mike Hill
Mike Hill retired in 2026 after a 35-year career in coaching, including the last 29 years as the head coach at Lawrence Free State High School. At Free State, Hill compiled a 463-195 record (70.36%), including 10 Sunflower League Championships and 10 state final-four appearances. The Firebirds were state-runners up four times and won state championships in 2006, 2015 and 2025. 13 Free State teams were nationally ranked. Hill was the Sunflower League Coach of the Year on seven occasions, the Kansas State Coach of the Year four times, and a finalist for the National Coach of the Year four times.
Nearly 200 Free State players obtained all-Sunflower League honors, including 72 first-team recipients. 64 Firebirds were all-state players, including 40 first-team members. 113 players obtained college scholarships, 38 at the Division 1 level. Six former Firebirds have played professional baseball, with one major leaguer.
